Witch Hollow joined an elite list of courses when it was selected to host its second U.S. Women’s Open Championship in 2003. The second time around, the course proved an even greater challenge when the leaders after Sunday were tied at just one under par and only four players finished the tournament at even par or better. Playing 6,550 yards, Witch Hollow became the longest course in Championship history. In an attempt to win the Championship outright, the world’s best woman golfer, Annika Sorenstam, made a heartbreaking bogey on 18 to miss the playoff by one shot and finish alone in fourth place. In Cindarella-like fashion, Hillary Lunke went on to defeat Angela Stanford and Kelly Robbins in an exciting 18-hole playoff Monday for the prestigious honor as 58th U.S. Women’s Open Champion.
